Castle Irwell is an exclusive new development scheme situated by the River Irwell in Salford and has been designed as an exceptional and unique destination for residents, boasting quality and tranquillity. The waterside development is beautifully landscaped, creating an oasis of calm outside the hustle and bustle of city centre life. The new destination is part of a regeneration scheme from the former disused land, designed with community and ecology in mind, with central organic gardens and play areas at its heart, set within a safe and secure environment.

Wright Landscapes were committed to delivering the vision to create the attractive new neighbourhood, delivering the hard and soft landscape package to the new public open spaces. As part of the project, we were assigned the redirecting of existing water channels to form sustainable drainage swales, introducing a bespoke children's play area, large scale earth works, planting schemes, inclusion of wildflower into communal areas, turfing, mature tree planting, cycle ways and woodland walks.

Our inhouse design team were heavily involved from conception to planning and construction to produce the final drawings for local authority approval; Liaising with architects and planning committees to bring the concept to life.

The scheme was situated on a flood plane. Wright Landscapes were tasked to form large channels guiding the water to river outlets mitigating the risk of a 1 in 100-year flood. We were challenged with the redesign and engineering of the retaining structures; maximising strength and accommodating access roads.

The planting design was formulated to encourage and increase wildlife by introducing an array of nectar-rich plants to support the reducing populations of native pollinators. The planting schemes have been intended to supply sustainable and environmental benefits that will improve the biodiversity on site; forming a vital ecology network with a source of food and habitat, offering a natural haven for wildlife.

In line with the client's mission to captivate and engage the residents to conserve, protect and enhance biodiversity, we have created a long-term plan achieved by continuous management, incentive schemes and community engagement; delivering an environment for people to enjoy and partake in nature, actively and passively.

Having successfully completed phase 1 of the project, Wright landscapes are in the process of delivering stages 4 & 5.
